Body Brushing is my Bae
Dry Skin Brushing
Did you happen to stumble upon my cellulite Instagram post?
If you happened to miss this masterpiece, it’s a series of pics of me carelessly galavanting along the beach in Mexico. I felt light and free- that is until I saw the pics. Each step I took exposed one of my least favorite looks; cellulite. Feel free to check it out here
I know I’m supposed to embrace these unflattering lumps and crevices and describe them as ‘beautiful and natural,’ but I just can’t. TBH, I HATE it!
Okay, hate is a strong word, but I don’t enjoy the aesthetics of cellulite, and I’ve never felt the dimply characteristics were acceptable. I begrudgingly tolerate it because I LOVE my body. I frolic on a beach because I like embracing life wayyy more than I dislike my cellulite raining on the parade.
I don’t let cellulite’s unwelcomed bumps derail my happiness, but me and my bum haven’t come to an agreement on it occupying this choice real estate. I’m going about getting it evicted or at least limiting its visitation hours & today I’m focusing on my bae, BODY BRUSHING!
STIMULATES A LAZY LYMPH
Not trying to point fingers here but if you’re idle then so is your lymphatic system. Like getting someone to take the garbage out, do dishes or clean up rooms, you need to be proactively nagging it ALL THE TIME.
Your lymph system has to rely on gravity and muscles to get things moving along but if these forces aren’t being put to use, then you’re destined to a life of cottage cheese accumulating here, there and everywhere that isn’t getting adequately hassled day in and day out. SO GET MOVIN’!! You can manually move your lymph system by DRY BRUSHING the heck out of your bod.
REDUCES CELLULITE.. DUH..
I'm guessing you're hear to iron out those lumps and bumps!! Dry brushing is shown to help reduce cellulite by removing toxins that may be building up in the connective tissue & even causing damage to it!! This damage is a lot like those quilts with the yarn pulled through causing the fabric to pucker causing the cute little pillowed squares… not necessarily cute when it’s on your rear but that’s a lot of what happens. You get fluid, toxin buildup but then also collagen breakdown causing your septae strands (made from collagen), the yarn part in the analogy to be broken down & less elastic so it pulls, increasing the bumps.
The Huffington Post reported: “when we’d heard dry skin brushing was an effective method for reducing cellulite, we knew we had to include it in our anti-cellulite road test. Sure enough, it was indeed one of the more successful ways to smooth away less-than-perfect spots on your legs.”
Who would I, #TheGutGirl be if I didn't talk about digestion.. I wouldn't even recognize myself!! Dry skin brushing has been shown to help your digestion and organ function. Especially if you dry brush your stomach area, in fact it can be like an elimination massage pushing all your ish through!! Pair this with topically applying digestive essential oils like anise for even better digestion… I’m a more is more type of gal!
“…many naturopathic doctors use dry brushing to help with bloating because massaging the lymph nodes helps the body shed excess water and toxins. One of the immediate effects of dry brushing is smoother skin, but it can also help improve digestion, kidney function, & more.”
Brush upwards, starting at the ankles, moving the toxins up to the thoracic duct, just below your neck, so that those nasty things get rerouted and purified! This will not just help with cellulite but will also assist in detoxifying the body.
I get in there especially when I’m sick to get all the ish out of my body. I’ll even pair it with sweating in a sauna to really get some work done! Like I said more is always more!!
As if you weren’t already sold on body brushing because of it exfoliating your skin making it tighter, glow and tighter as well as detoxing the body and improving digestion.. But wait there’s more (said in my best game show voice)
Body Brushing is invigorating!! You’ll see your energy increase and it also just feels SOOOO good!!
The act of dry brushing can reduce muscle tension, calm the mind, relieve stress and can be part of your morning routine.. Put on some music & make it part of your morning meditation!
This may be obvious but dry skin brushing helps clear off all that dead, gray skin that’s making your complexion dull. It has done wonders for the back of my arms and legs where I’d get bumps! My derm said they’re caused by quick skin turnover without proper exfoliation so that new skin is getting trapped.
Last but certainly not least, Consistency is the Key!!!
Dry Skin Brushing wakes up a lazy lymph system, getting rid of excess fluid, bacteria, viruses and cell waste. It’s kinda like doing some spring cleaning & taking it all to the dump!!
The lymphatic system is a series of checkpoints, like Disney workers asking to see your pass. If you have a pass, they send you right on thru. When this system is working well, you’ll feel stronger, energized and overall healthier.
If it’s not then you can feel sluggish, fogged and even get sick more often.
Like I said… My BAE is Dry Brushing
